New Species Found: Starry Stonewort

In July the DEQ confirmed the existence of Starry Stonewort in Round Lake and the channel between Round and Devils Lake. PLM has already treated the areas that were discovered. Previous treatments would be ineffective as
Starry Stonewort is a highly aggressive and rapidly spreading invasive macro algae, not a weed.
Starry stonewort resembles Chara, but the key difference is it has tiny, tan, star-shaped “bulbils” that are firm to the touch.
It is everyone's responsibility to patrol our lakes and report sightings of invasive species so that they may be treated appropriately and promptly. If you see something that you suspect is an invasive species contact a weed committee member, Rollin or Woodstock Township, or a board member of the Lakes Preservation League. Don't assume someone else will do it!
